I feel like Doom Eternal’s design choices are so blatant that they draw attention over everything else. The result is that every content creator is basically saying the same things about the game. Yea or nay on the ammo count/chainsaw system. The Marauder is a pain to fight, yea, or nay on the tone. Game Maker’s Toolkit by Mark Brown is the only content creator I’ve seen with a Millard Fillmypintmore Drink Drink 4th Of July Vintage Shirt. I wouldn’t call doom 2016 dead serious at all tho. Because the way the slayer started by always doing the opposite of what he was instructed to do was pretty much a comedy routine. And all the logs from the company telling their employee what to do in case of the demonic incursion were also pretty humorous.

The game had a lot of humor in it, it just wasn’t “borderland-like” humor with jokes left and right. It was “dry humor”, where the absurd situation was taken seriously is the core of the comedy. It’s not serious, but they did play the tone much better. Eternal has much more serious spots and much more ridiculous humor. And there’s just no middle ground to connect them. So the Slayer being referred to as Doomguy and Doom Marine was punishingly bad. As was all of Sentinel Prime, and every single one of the Millard Fillmypintmore Drink Drink 4th Of July Vintage Shirt. But all of that content was abysmally bad. On one hand, the game is giving you all these lore entries to try. And build up a sort of cohesive world and then those holograms.

Ah, a man sees I totally disagree with your second paragraph. I love the more ridiculous arcadey feel of Doom Eternal’s story and aesthetic. Eternal feels like a distillation of my favorite parts of Doom 2016 and a real return to the more abstract design principles of the original. Everything in Eternal was designed to be a fun Millard Fillmypintmore Drink Drink 4th Of July Vintage Shirt. And the story is just an excuse to take the player to all these wildly different areas. The level design was spot on from that perspective, and I even enjoyed the cutscenes and story bits – they’re optional but exactly the kind of campy cheese I want when playing Doom. The environments and scope and detail were amazing, don’t get me wrong.
